Discover Il Capriccio

Walking into Il Capriccio at 704 Main St, Waltham, MA 02451, United States feels like stepping into a neighborhood tradition that’s been quietly perfecting Italian comfort food for years. I first came here on a recommendation from a local chef I worked with during a short consulting project in Greater Boston, and it instantly made sense why it keeps coming up in conversations among food professionals and longtime residents alike. The atmosphere is relaxed, unfussy, and warm, which sets the tone for a meal that’s about flavor and familiarity rather than show.

The menu leans confidently into classic Italian dishes, and that confidence shows in execution. Fresh pasta, slow-simmered sauces, and well-balanced seasoning define most plates. I’ve watched the kitchen during a busy dinner service, and the process is refreshingly straightforward: sauces prepared early in the day, pasta cooked to order, and proteins handled with restraint rather than overcomplication. This approach mirrors what culinary instructors from organizations like the Culinary Institute of America often emphasize-mastery of fundamentals before flair-and it pays off here. Dishes arrive hot, consistent, and clearly made by cooks who know their recipes inside out.

One of my go-to orders is the house-made pasta with a rich tomato-based sauce that tastes like it’s been given time to develop real depth. According to data from the National Restaurant Association, pasta remains one of the most frequently ordered comfort foods in the U.S., especially in full-service restaurants, and places like this explain why. The flavors are approachable without being bland, and portions are generous enough to satisfy without feeling excessive. You’ll also find seafood and meat options that rotate slightly depending on availability, which reflects a practical understanding of sourcing rather than rigid menu planning.

What stands out is how consistently positive the reviews are across different platforms. Regulars mention returning for family dinners, anniversaries, and casual weeknight meals, which says a lot about trust. In my experience working with restaurant audits, repeat visits are one of the clearest indicators of quality, and Il Capriccio benefits from that loyalty. Staff members tend to remember faces and preferences, a small detail that builds rapport and makes guests feel welcome without crossing into forced friendliness.

The location on Main Street makes it easy to reach, whether you’re coming from downtown Waltham or nearby neighborhoods. Parking can be limited during peak hours, which is worth noting, but most guests agree it’s a minor trade-off. The dining room itself is comfortable rather than trendy, with tables spaced well enough for conversation. You can hear laughter, clinking glasses, and the hum of people genuinely enjoying their food, which adds to the overall experience.

From a professional standpoint, the restaurant’s strength lies in its restraint. There’s no attempt to reinvent Italian cuisine or chase passing food trends. Instead, it focuses on consistency, hospitality, and dishes that people actually want to eat again. That approach aligns with research from Cornell University’s School of Hotel Administration, which has shown that perceived consistency and service reliability heavily influence diner satisfaction and long-term loyalty.

There are limitations worth mentioning. If you’re looking for experimental plates or a constantly changing menu, this may not be the right fit. Likewise, those seeking a high-energy nightlife vibe might find the atmosphere too calm. Still, for anyone who values well-prepared Italian food, attentive service, and a sense of local character, this restaurant delivers exactly what it promises. It’s the kind of place that doesn’t need hype because its reputation is built one plate at a time.

  • We arrived greeted by a nice open and clean space. They drinks were good with goof Italian wines. The calamari portion was small and not that great. The Halibut was fresh, but not as favorable and cost $42. Service was prompt, but a sloppy being not as polished as a Boston restaurant. The dessert was good, but canollis are missing. Overall, staff need better training. Sauce and Food need to come up one notch. There are much better local places for the price such as The Chateau, Frattelis and Lucia's in Winchester.

  • Hosted a small business meeting earlier this week at Il Capriccio, and had an excellent experience! We were able to reserve a private room for 12, which was perfect. The food and beverages were excellent, and our server, Ann, did a fantastic job. Will definitely be back!

  • We celebrated my Mom's 80th birthday here and rented out a room for the special occasion. We requested that the bartender create 2 special cocktails for the event, and both were delicious! The service was top-notch, and food was amazing! You have to try the mushroom souffle! I am so grateful to the staff for giving my Mom a wonderful birthday celebration and look forward to many more meals there.

  • I had the pleasure of dining at IL Capriccio in Waltham, MA for our annual dinner, and it was an outstanding experience. Everything from the service to the food was impeccable. The highlight of the evening was definitely the soufflé di porcini; it was a culinary masterpiece! I highly recommend IL Capriccio for a delightful dining experience.

  • If you are looking for an ever changing inspired Italian menu, with light and tasty food, you will enjoy Il Capriccio. Very few places around Boston match this level of quality. Wine list is inspired. And for those nights, very nice Virgin cocktails.

  • 2025: We went to il Capriccio for my husband's 70th birthday. We hadn't been there since they changed locations. There are a couple main dining rooms, which are very homey, and a couple small dining rooms for small groups. The food was exceptional as always. The service top notch. They change menus monthly, with some items staying on perpetually. (The porcini dish was taken off the menu a couple times over the years, and customers complained so much that they put it back on - never to be removed again.) My husband had the tuna tartar for his appetizer and the carbonara (with a poached egg on top) as a main. Our friend had the porcini souffle for the appetizer and the duck for her entre. I had the porcini souffle and the halibut. All dishes were excellent. It is always a 5-star experience. 2018: We don't go to il Capriccio very often simply because it is a fairly expensive restaurant. It is always a huge treat when we go. We look forward to it all week. The service is excellent. The wine selection extensive. The staff wine recommendations are always good to fall back on if the huge wine list is too daunting. The food is always perfect. Some of our favorites: porcini souffle (they've taken it off the menu a couple times but always have to put it back on because people complain so much); tuna tartar with warm homemade potato chips; gravlax with white anchovies; carbonara with a poached egg on top; the lamb and duck are always great; the chicken schinitzel; and a chocolate budino molten cake for desert. Five stars - always.
